This is Us: Autism and SEN/D-friendly workshop at the Cartoon Museum

‘This Is Us’ is a workshop designed for neurodiverse pupils at all levels of ability. Participants have the opportunity to make their own unique contribution to a giant cartoon picture that can be taken away for display at school. During the session, pupils work together to create a large colourful background for their work – lines, colours, shapes and patterns. Then, using a template, they will draw cartoon versions of themselves with a speech bubble where they can write how they’re feeling. These will be cut out and stuck to the background that will finish up depicting the whole group in their own ‘cartoon world’. They will also have the opportunity to explore the main gallery and search for four cartoons on display.

The workshop lasts for two hours, including time spent in the gallery and time for a mid-way break for snacks, etc. It can be available on Mondays, when the museum is closed to the public ensuring a peaceful experience, or on Tuesday-Friday. The workshop has been designed to be most suitable for pupils in Year 3 and above. Visual schedules and adapted resources will be used to enhance the predictability and understanding of the session, and you will be sent ‘social stories’ to support your trip in advance. The workshop has been designed in collaboration with an autism specialist.

‘This Is Us’ is sponsored by John Lyon’s Charity and is available free to schools and groups catering for children with autism and SEN/D in the following boroughs: Barnet, Brent, Camden, Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, Harrow, Kensington & Chelsea, Westminster, and City of London. For schools and groups outside these boroughs there is a fee of £50.00.
